Many Voices 2009 — 46 languages contributed on the day

Thank you to everyone who participated, attended or helped in any way to make Many Voices 2009 a wonderful celebration

We’ve had many positive comments on the day and received the following by e-mail: “Congratulations to you and the team for Many Voices on Saturday. Not having been last year I was not sure what to expect but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was very moving to feel part of God's global family and to be able to share in so many different cultures - it brought a whole new understanding of what happened at Pentecost.”

We are delighted to report that at Many Voices 2009 there were contributions in the following 46 languages: Afrikaans, Arabic, Aramaic, Bengali, Cantonese, Croatian, Dari, Dutch, English, Farsi, French, Fulah, Gangulu, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Ibo, Icelandic, Irish Gaelic, Italian, Kikongo, Kinrwandan, Kismaasai, Kiswahili, Kurdish Sorani, Latin, Lingala, Luganda, Mandarin, Maori, Mapudungan, Moldovan, Romanian, Runyankore, Russian, Scottish Gaelic, Shona, Spanish, Swedish, Teke, Tigrinian, Urdu, Welsh, Xhosa, Yoruba and Zulu.
Contributions were mainly from clients and supporters of Restore. There was a mix of singing and reading. There were also performances by Global Harmony (singing group linked to Handsworth Welcome!), Annamation (friends of Sarah Dixon) and Alice Halstead, BBC Radio 2 Young Chorister of the year (arranged by Angela Cameron of Solihull Welcome!)

We know from our own memories of who we saw at the event and from looking at photos we know that there were over 175 people at Many Voices 2009. In fact the Cathedral’s Verger gave an estimate of 260 -280, based on how many of the Cathedral seats were filled and that there was a flow of people coming and going through the event.

The event raised over £2,100 for Restore’s work — for which we are extremely grateful.

And some encouragement for you — such events do work! In December 2007, a group of supporters ran a Tombola at their local farmers market to raise awareness and to raised over £150 for Restore.

Unfortunately, as Restore staff are not able to do all the organising of such events centrally — we need your help please. So we are hoping that supporters or Management Committee members or refugees can catch the vision and run with these ideas ... or other ideas. If you would like to help or if you have any ideas that you can implement please contact Jeremy — 0121 766 8764 or email befriend@restore-uk.org or use the address below.

Financial gifts are always welcome!
