Refugee-led petition against changes to the asylum process that erode refugee rights

Please make your voice heard in support of refugee rights.

A small group of refugees and people seeking asylum in the West Midlands came together recently, with Asylum Matters and BIRCH, because they wanted to set up a petition against:

  • The proposed 20-year route to settlement, which is currently 5 years. During those 20 years, they will then be reviewed every 2.5 years to see if their country is safe for them to be returned to.  That would leave people, who the UK has recognised as victims of persecution in need of refugee protection, in limbo and unable to settle properly for 20 years.
  • The suspension of family reunion and the prospect that if it’s reinstated, it will be very restricted. That would mean that people, who the UK has recognised as victims of persecution in need of refugee protection, will be unable to be joined by their spouse and any dependent children.

The petition is now published on the 38 Degrees website and will become a nationwide public campaign

Please support this refugee-led campaign initiative and Sign and share their petition!

The petition was launched recently, and we need to boost the number of signatories. The target is tens of thousands of signatures so that the Government has to take notice.

How we treat the most vulnerable in society, reflects who we are as a nation.  We need a just and compassionate asylum system that works for all. Thank you to Asylum Matters and BIRCH Network for facilitating the campaign.
